As a programmer, I’d say the kind of things they’re discussing web 3.0 doing are many years away. Your roughtype.com link listed this as the holy grial:

“Iâ€™m looking for a warm place to vacation and I have a budget of $3,000. Oh, and I have an 11-year-old child.”, where someone could type that in and they could return a package “that was planned as meticulously as if it had been assembled by a human travel agent”.

For heavens sake, think of the metadata that would require! There’s too much unstructured data floating around the Internet now, it would all have to be “tagged” to be readable by computers first.

I think web 2.0 is both. It’s made the conversation, relationship and user-focused/controlled content much more available. Which is why it’s also a huge marketing push.

The article is interesting. We are a ways away from it. But does it transcend the web all together?

Hm. I’m not convinced that this “web 3.0″ is anything other than the more efficient and effective use of “web 2.0.”

And I think web 2.0 is more than just a marketing term. It is taking a while to catch on, but it is really changing the way people gather information and interact with each other online through easy online publication vehicles, easy syndication, and most of all the widgets that people are beginning to build with that easy syndication.

I think “Second Earth” in the July/August Technology Review presents a much more dramatic picture of what web 3.0 could be. And it is still several years away.
