There are lots of keys to creating a successful business. Yet the one that I’ve found to be most important – and often most lacking in small businesses is positioning.

There’s lots of definitions of positioning because the term is often used along side branding. The definition that I gravitate to is:

Positioning is the space that you wish to occupy in your target audience’s mind, relative to your competitors.

In this short video, Guy Kawasaki talks about positioning and finding your niche. The key, as he suggests is know thyself and know thy niche.

So the key is to clearly identify how you position yourself in your niche. In other words, how do people perceive your products and services.

So, how strong is your position? And how unique is your business? Let’s chat about it.

Here’s our idea. Please be gentle.

Domain Names that Look Like Phone Numbers as a way to connect with mobile surfers.

    Example using the word ‘Pizza’
    1-Pizza.com
    1-Pizza.mobi
1-74992.com (74992 spells Pizza on phone keypad)
    1-74992.mobi

The 1- mimics a phone number so it’s a great memory trigger for people using a phone to connect to the web.

    Thanks Dawud.

We’re also having some fun with our ‘Don’t Call Me spoofs’ — a fun example of putting a number to work in a domain; 3668225563.com

Because ‘3668225563’ translates to ‘Dont Call Me’ on a phone keypad.

This may be the greatest privacy tool ever invented if we say so ourselves…

    Outlook,
If it’s about being famous. I know plenty of very successful small business owners – making well into 6 figures – who only a few, select folks know.

    Number Fan,
    Good point.

I have dealt with positioning in my niche through specialization. Finding a niche within a niche, so to speak. The other thing is to make this specialization sounds special through unusual labeling.

    Number Fan,
How fun and interesting is that? Now you know I’m going to have to look at my digits on the phone for dawudmiracle.com

    Mike,
You’re welcome. What did you take away from the video that was most useful?

And, btw, I’ve always loved the WordPress theme you’re using on your blog.

    Debbie,
But don’t you find that ‘usual labeling’ can get in the way of usability?

creating a position in your niche is somthing you get only after some years of experience and when people start following your work. Its not that easy to get at top only by few days of work

Good video, “High and to the right… like our president”

You also want to be high in SEO rankings, but not necessarily like GWB is for “high plains grifter”!

    I think it’s a great video.
It’s hard to get to the top as long as the time passes, it depends on the niche!
